چکیده

Abstract It has been proven that the maximum cooling temperature of a thermoelectric material can be increased by using either pulsed operation or graded Seebeck profiles. In this paper, we show that the maximum cooling temperature can be further increased by the pulsed operation of optimal inhomogeneous thermoelectric materials. A random sampling method is used to obtain the optimal electrical conductivity profile of inhomogeneous materials, which can achieve a much higher cooling temperature than the best uniform materials under the steady-state condition. Numerical simulations of pulsed operation are then carried out in the time domain. In the limit of low thermoelectric figure-of-merit ZT, the finite-difference time-domain simulations are verified by an analytical solution for homogeneous material. This numerical method is applied to high ZT BiTe materials and simulations show that the effective figure-of-merit can be improved by 153% when both optimal graded electrical conductivity profiles and pulsed operation are used.

Maximum cooling temperature and uniform efficiency criterion for inhomogeneous thermoelectric materials

The maximum cooling temperature of a uniform thermoelectric material is limited by its dimensionless figure of merit ZT. Inhomogeneous or graded thermoelectric materials are mainly studied when there is a large temperature gradient and the material composition is typically optimized for maximum local ZT. We show that this is not the correct optimization for maximizing the cooling temperature. W...

Exact Solution of a Constrained Optimization Problem in Thermoelectric Cooling

We consider an optimization problem in thermoelectric cooling. The maximum achievable cooling temperature in thermoelectric cooling is, among other things, affected by the Seebeck coefficient profile of the inhomogeneous materials. Mathematically, the maximum cooling temperature is a non-linear functional of the Seebeck coefficient function. In this study, we solve this optimization problem exa...

New Physical Interpretation of Thermoelectric Cooling in Semiconductor Structures

Nontraditional approach to explain the thermoelectric cooling is suggested . It is based on the Le ChatelierBraun thermodynamic principle. New effect of cooling and heating of junction of two materials (barrierless thermoelectric cooling) is theoretically predicted, and this effect is different from the Peltier effect (barrier thermoelectric cooling). The suggested thermoelectric effect must be...

Effect of conjugate heat transfer in designing thermoelectric beverage cooler

Peltier technology opens new opportunities for special applications. In the current project, this technology was applied to design and fabricate a portable thermoelectric beverage cooler and thermoelectric cup. The simulation and results of the experiment showed that the common beverage cooler is not a suitable design for ignoring the effect of natural convection in cooling. In our thermoel...
